A Month of Resilience and Reflection: USSSU’s July 2024 Report

At Universal Seniors Social Services Uganda (USSSU), July 2024 was a month filled with progress, resilience, and deep reflection. We witnessed milestones in shelter projects, improvements in senior health, and heartbreaking losses—all reinforcing the importance of our work in restoring dignity and support to Uganda’s elderly population.

Through home visits, medical support, advocacy, and community mobilization, we continue to be a lifeline for seniors in Manafwa District. Here’s what we accomplished this month.

Home Visits: Small Changes, Big Impact

Our routine home visits this month focused on monitoring sanitation and hygiene while checking on the well-being of seniors. We saw encouraging progress, as families made significant improvements in:

Setting up drying racks for hygiene

Digging rubbish pits to prevent diseases

Keeping homes clean and free from pests

However, seniors who live alone continue to struggle with these tasks, requiring external support to maintain their homes.

🐍 Facing Danger at Home: Kezia Nekesa’s Story

During a visit to Ms. Kezia Nekesa’s home, we discovered a frightening reality—her house was full of holes, making it a breeding ground for snakes.

❌ While cleaning, a snake emerged from one of the holes, terrifying Kezia and her daughter.

✅ We immediately applied pesticide and paraffin to seal off the holes and prevent further threats.

💡 Many seniors face similar unsafe living conditions, emphasizing the urgent need for better housing support.

Additionally, Kezia’s bedding was found in terrible condition, reinforcing the need for mattresses and blankets for seniors living in extreme poverty.

Stories of Strength and Survival

Despite their struggles, some seniors continue to inspire us with their unwavering resilience.

🌿 The Oldest Client, Still Going Strong: Erina Bilali (102 Years Old!)

During a visit to Ms. Erina Bilali, the oldest member of our program, we were amazed to find her fetching firewood at 102 years old!

💪 She continues to manage household chores on her own, despite her advanced age.

🙏 She remains grateful to God for the strength to carry on.

Her story is a powerful reminder that age does not define one’s spirit!

🚑 A Second Chance at Life: Margaret Namarome’s Journey with Dementia

Last month, we reported Ms. Margaret Namarome’s struggles with dementia, including wandering through the community and being injured by a bull.

📌 This month, she was finally taken to the hospital and started on medication.

✅ Her condition has significantly improved—she is now able to rest at home and complete daily activities.

💙 Her daughters-in-law have stepped up as caretakers, ensuring she receives proper support.

We are grateful for the hospital’s commitment to offering ongoing care, giving Margaret a chance at stability and comfort in her later years.

⚠️ A Tragic Accident: Tolita Nandeke’s Broken Leg

Not all stories this month were filled with victory.

😢 Ms. Tolita Nandeke, who already has a handicapped leg, suffered a devastating accident.

❌ While splitting firewood, she accidentally struck her supporting leg with an axe, breaking it.

❌ She is now bedridden, in extreme pain, and unable to move.

This case highlights the urgent need for better safety awareness among seniors and proper support systems to help them manage daily tasks safely.
