Service Area:
USSSU serves communities in the Elgon region of Eastern Uganda, with a mission to uplift and support one of the most vulnerable populations in the country—our seniors.

We believe in simplicity of structure, teamwork, and the power of voluntary service and donations to drive positive change. At USSSU, we proudly embrace and promote cultural diversity and inclusion. Seniors from all backgrounds—including those with disabilities and individuals from all ethnicities, religions, cultures, racialized communities, and gender identities—are welcome and supported.

History​

USSSU was co-founded by Betty Wakou and Mary Khanakwa in September 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. The devastating impact of the pandemic on seniors, and the visible service gaps, inspired the creation of this organization. Many seniors did not survive the pandemic, underscoring the urgent need for compassionate and structured support.

To ensure that seniors in Uganda live secure, dignified, and meaningful lives.

 

Our Mission

USSSU is a charitable organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for seniors aged 65 years and older. We work hand-in-hand with local communities to bridge service gaps and provide:

• Access to nutritious food and basic medical care, including support for seniors living with HIV/AIDS

• Psychosocial support and community engagement

• Education and awareness programs

• Opportunities for seniors to maintain independence, dignity, and purpose​

In order to fulfill the above vision and mission, the purpose of USSSU is to: Meet gaps to reduce poverty and destitution; meet good nutrition, health and education (including HIV/AIDS), restore dignity and independence; create employment for seniors; engage participation of local community-based programs in the care of seniors, create awareness of HIV/AIDS among seniors and dependents, and promote the wellbeing and productivity of seniors, and to integrate them in today's economy, politics and society

In order to fulfill the above vision and mission, the purpose of USSSU shall be to:

1. Meet gaps to reduce poverty and destitution in the lives of our seniors.

2. Provide a happier, healthier engaged community approach.

3. Provide good nourishment.

4. Restore seniors’ dignity and independence.

5. Provide temporary relief to families of seniors while attending congregate program.

6. Create sustainable employment and add value to lifestyles of community members.

7. Provide access to health and education services for seniors.

8. Promote communities to participate in local community-based programs.

9. Promote the wellbeing and productivity of seniors, and to integrate them in today's economy, politics and society.

10. Provide education to families to support the seniors at home.
