Universal Seniors Social Services Uganda serves communities in the Elgon region of Eastern Uganda with a mission to uplift and support one of the most vulnerable populations in the country—our seniors.
We believe in simplicity of structure, teamwork, and the power of voluntary service and donations to drive positive change. USSSU embraces cultural diversity and inclusion, welcoming seniors from all backgrounds, including those with disabilities and individuals from all ethnicities, religions, cultures, racialized communities, and gender identities.
USSSU was co-founded by Betty Wakou and Mary Khanakwa in September 2020 at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The devastating impact of the pandemic on seniors, along with visible service gaps, inspired the creation of the organization. Many seniors did not survive the pandemic, underscoring the urgent need for compassionate, structured, and community-based support.
USSSU serves communities in the Elgon region of Eastern Uganda, working directly in places where seniors face serious gaps in care, support, and daily resources.
This local focus allows the organization to respond with more personal, culturally grounded, and practical support for older adults and the families and communities around them.
USSSU is a charitable organization dedicated to improving the quality of life of seniors in Uganda, one of the most vulnerable populations in the country.
Our Vision: To ensure that seniors in Uganda live secure, dignified, and meaningful lives.
Our Mission: USSSU is dedicated to improving the quality of life for seniors aged 65 years and older by working hand-in-hand with local communities to bridge service gaps and provide access to nutritious food, basic medical care, psychosocial support, education, awareness, and opportunities that help seniors maintain independence, dignity, and purpose.
In order to fulfill its vision and mission, USSSU works to reduce poverty and destitution, improve access to good nutrition, health, and education, including HIV/AIDS support, and restore dignity and independence for seniors.
The organization also creates opportunities for seniors, engages local community-based programs in care, promotes HIV/AIDS awareness among seniors and dependents, and supports the wellbeing, productivity, and integration of older adults into today’s economy, politics, and society.
